Bucktown Lofts
A History

The J.F. Kelly Building (Bucktown) is located centrally in one of Davenport's more colorful districts. From dozens of brothels and speakeasys to manufacturing, distribution, automotive, and retail, Bucktown has played many roles in downtown's development. The Bucktown district has been at the core of Davenport's ongoing socio-economic development.

1841

WALTER KELLY ARRIVES TO DAVENPORT

Walter Kelly, an Irish immigrant, arrives to Davenport and begins several businesses. His son, John F. Kelly, purchases his fathers interest and starts a wholesale grocery store at 102 Front Street in 1884.

1910

J.F. KELLY WAREHOUSE CONSTRUCTION

The J.F. Kelly Company is awarded a 25 year lease at today's location of the Bucktown building, with an option to purchase the building for $40,000 in 1914. The building is constructed in 1910 and is built on the former site of Brick Munro's Pavillion and Summer Garden.

1932

J.F KELLY COMPANY FAILS DUE TO UNDETERMINED REASONS

The J.F. Kelly company covers markets in Eastern lowa and Western Illinois. Its cashier Albert Lamp is indicted for embezzlement in 1933.

1949-1955

ROBERT HALL CLOTHES TAKES OVER THE J.F. KELLY WAREHOUSE

When prohibition arrives in 1919, and its red light district days over, Bucktown emerges as a local automobile hub. Dealer showrooms, service stations, and auto supply stores join other businesses along the street. In 1949, Robert Hall opens a large retail shop in the Bucktown building. Later uses include warehousing and distribution.

Today's neighborhood is a vibrant blend of shops, businesses, housing, eateries, and entertainment venues. It's history is reflected in its "Davenport Motor Row and Warehouse Historic District” National Register designation.
